Hypothyroidism
“Hypo-” is a Greek prefix meaning “under.” Those diagnosed with hypothyroidism have an underactive or low-functioning thyroid gland. Most patients with hypothyroidism will have a high TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone), and a lower free T4 and free T3. There are several reasons for hypothyroidism, including a past viral attack on the thyroid gland, autoimmune thyroid disease that has never been properly diagnosed, or due to surgical removal of the thyroid gland.
Optimizing all thyroid levels, including TSH, free T4, free T3, and reverse T3, is important to achieve better thyroid health and minimizing symptoms.
