General Questions

I'm looking for basic info about the practice.

Our lead physician, Dr. Brittany Henderson, MD, is the owner of the Charleston Thyroid Center.  All of our Providers are licensed US-trained medical providers (MD, NP, or PA), are fully certified by the American Thyroid Institute, and personally trained & overseen by Dr. Henderson.  We decided to open an online practice due to the increasing demand from patients from other states.  It also allows patients the ability to be seen faster than waiting for our practice’s normal wait-time.

How can I contact you?

Click here for our contact information.

In which states can you see patients?
  • We are currently licensed to practice medicine in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Minnesota, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.
  • Additional states will be added upon demand.  Click here to request your state be added.
Why are you limited to certain states?

All 50 states have laws that state that physicians are only allowed to see patients if they hold a medical license in that state. This fact depends on where the patient is located, not where the doctor is located. Since we cannot prove your location at the time of your appointment, we limit our services to legal residents of those states (as shown by a government-issued photo ID).

How do I send records, images, and labs to you?
  • Since our medical practitioners may be located throughout the United States, we do not accept any paper records.  You can either fax or email your records to us.  If your physician won’t do that, you’ll need to request that they send records to you first and then you can email or fax them to us.  Click here for contact details.
  • Labs will come to us automatically if you use Labcorp.
  • To send ultrasound or other radiology images, click here.
I'm not sure where to find something on your website.

There are a lot of moving parts to keep track of.  Click here to know where to find everything and what services are used for what items.

Are you affiliated with Charleston Thyroid Center?

Although we share medical Providers, due to insurance regulations, we are a different company from Charleston Thyroid Center.

Appointment Questions

Does Dr. Henderson see follow-up patients?

Due to the sheer amount of patients needing to be seen, it was impossible for Dr. Henderson to continue seeing routine follow-up patients for both her Charleston practice as well as this online practice.  She will see new patients and then will hand them off to her Advanced Practice Providers who work with her daily and were trained personally by her to practice the exact way that she does.  The only way to schedule follow-up appointments with her is to become a member of her ThyroidVIP program. Details can be found here.

Can I see you for other medical problems?

We are a thyroid-specific practice.  Please see your primary care doctor or other specialist for all other medical concerns.  Even if you believe that another issue may be related to your thyroid, it is best that you first talk to your local PCP or other specialist.

As a thyroid-specific practice, we also do not treat other endocrine diagnoses such as pituitary, parathyroid, adrenal, or diabetes.

Do I need a referral?

Since we do not accept insurance, referrals are not needed or accepted.

What if I have another thyroid diagnosis that what is listed?
  • We currently see patients with hypothyroidism, Hashimoto’s disease, post-operative hypothyroidism, Post-ablative hypothyroidism, and people who are interested in thyroid screening.
  • Due to the need for more intensive monitoring, patients with thyroid cancer or Graves’ disease should seek care from a local endocrinologist.  However, if you’ve already had radioactive iodine treatment for your Graves’ disease, we can see you.
Can I be seen in person instead of telehealth?
  • We are an telehealth-only practice.

I need to confirm the date or time of my upcoming appointment.
  • Please log on to your patient portal where you will find that information.

I need to change or cancel my upcoming appointment.
  • Please email us at admin@mythyroiddoctor.com.

What is your cancellation policy?
  • You may change or cancel your appointment up to 24 hours prior to your appointment for a full refund.  After that, no changes can be made nor refunds given.  If you do not receive your refund within a few days of cancelling your appointment, please email us to let us know.

I prefer to see a thyroid specialist near me. Who do you suggest?
  • We believe that our practice is very unique in terms of combining conventional & complementary medicine and customizing care.  We do not know of another practice that is capable of producing similar results, and therefore we cannot recommend anyone in particular.  You may want to look into a functional medicine provider or lookup a provider on the ATA website.

I'm looking for a thyroid surgeon.
  • Most major cities and academic medical centers have qualified surgeons and/or ENT’s that can perform thyroid surgery.

Who do you suggest for other thyroid procedures (RFA and Ethanol ablation)?
  • Dr. Henderson performs thyroid alcohol ablation (PEI) at her clinic in Charleston, SC.  This procedure is used for fluid-filled thyroid cysts.  This procedure tends to be covered by insurance.  Please email her office manager at office@charlestonthyroid.com for more information.  You’ll need to mail her a copy of your most recent thyroid ultrasound for her to review before scheduling the procedure to make sure that you’re a good candidate for the procedure.

  • There are only a few thyroid centers in the United States that perform Thyroid Radiofrequency ablation (RFA).  Dr. Henderson does not perform this at her clinic.  A quick internet search will help you find those places.  RFA is used for solid thyroid nodules.  It is usually not covered by insurance.

Blood Work & Test Questions

When & where do I get blood work?

You may get your blood work done anywhere you wish, however we prefer Labcorp so that we can access your results electronically.  It should be done about 2 weeks before EVERY appointment, unless your Provider specifically told you not to.  Click here to read more about lab options.

I have other questions about getting my blood drawn.

I did a specialty test and haven't received my results yet.
  • Specialty blood, stool, & urine tests can take up to 4 weeks to process.  If it’s been more than a month since the sample was mailed, email us at labs@mythyroiddoctor.com.

Prescription Questions

What if my insurance requires a prior authorization (PA) for my prescription?

Unfortunately, we do not do PA’s.  By using our service, you are agreeing that it is your responsibility to pay for your prescriptions.  You may personally request your prescription information from the pharmacist and then contact your insurance company to challenge their decision.  Your Provider can also discuss alternatives and pricing during your visit.  Click here for further info on prescriptions.

Are compounded medicines covered by insurance?

Almost never.  If you want, you can ask your pharmacist to provide a receipt that you may submit to your insurance.  As we are not in-network with any insurances, we cannot provide any letters or documentation facilitating this.

I have other questions about my prescriptions.

I'm having side-effects from my prescription(s).

Insurance Questions

Do you accept my insurance?

We are a cash-pay medical practice and do not accept any insurance.

Can I use my insurance for anything?

Yes, depending on your specific health insurance coverage details, you can likely use your medical insurance for blood work and prescriptions.  The only thing that is not covered is the actual appointment.

Will my health insurance carrier pay for this visit?
  • Maybe…. After your visit, you will receive a receipt that contains billing and appointment information.  You are responsible for contacting your health insurance company and submitting the claim yourself.  Click here for more details.

  • Patients with Medicare, by federal law, are not allowed to request reimbursement for services obtained from medical Providers who have formally opted out of Medicare.

I have Medicare. Are there limitations on seeing me as a patient?
  • All of our current Providers have opted out of Medicare so you are allowed to see them as a self-pay patient.

Why don't you do prior authorizations?
  • Insurance companies are interested in profits, not your health.  They make money by not paying for things, even if your doctor thinks they are necessary.  To get those services covered, your doctor is forced to jump through hoops, which ultimately incurs a cost that your doctor has to pay on your behalf.  In turn, this further increases health care costs.  Since we don’t deal with insurance companies, we won’t play their games.
